Christmas Fancy Dress Dinner – 22 December 2013

07 Dec
December 7, 2013

Yes it’s that time of year so you need to start looking through your wardrobes for your fancy dress outfit. We’re back at the Cheshire Cheese in Hope this year for our Christmas dinner.
Usual meet at the ‘teacake’ at 11 o’clock and we’ll probably call in at the Little John in Hathersage for a swift half before riding onto Hope for our lunch.

New Club meeting room venue…

07 Dec
December 7, 2013

Bit of a late post but we have a new venue for our monthly meetings.
We are now at the Broomgrove Club, 74 Broomgrove Road, S10 2NA.
It’s just off Ecclesall Road near the Fat Face shop and yes there is a bar.
There isn’t a car park but you’re ok to park on Broomgrove Road itself or Ecce Road for free at that time of night.

George Lascelles – Obituary – Funeral

24 Oct
October 24, 2013

Sunday 3 November
George’s funeral will take place next Wednesday 6th Nov 11:45 at Whiston Parish Church in Rotherham.

Monday 28 October.
Jim phoned me again this evening to let me know that sadly George has passed away. No further details are known at this time but as soon as they are I will let everyone know.
Our thoughts are with Norma and the rest of the family at this very sad time.

Thursday 24 Oct.
Jim Hall has phoned me tonight to let me know that George Lascelles had a dodgy turn yesterday riding through Firbeck, blacked out and hit a parked car. He wasn’t sure whether he’d had a heart attack or a stroke at the time but he was taken to hospital and was put into an induced coma and is currently in intensive care.
Jim said he’ll phone his wife Norma tomorrow to find out any further news and will let me know any developments.
Friday 25 Oct.
Bill Straker has spoken to Alan West this evening…….George is in Rotherham General. He had a cardiac arrest whilst riding, hit a car and broke his vertebrae and some ribs. The problem was his heart stopped so he was put in an induced coma and they are waiting to see what damage has been done when he comes round.

Sunday in Sheffield

Obituary : – Derek Harrop

07 Jul
July 7, 2013

Just a note to some of the Club members that have been around for several years that Derek Harrop has passed away this week at the age of 82.
Jim Hall let me know a few weeks ago that Derek had been taken into hospital with bowel cancer and things didn’t sound too good for him.
His sister has been taking care of things including his house and sadly there won’t be a funeral service in Sheffield as his body is to be buried in private grounds down south in the Ipswich/Norfolk area I think.

Dick Bartrop’s in town…

23 May
May 23, 2013

For those of you that are old enough to remember Dick Bartrop, the news is that he is here on a visit from Australia. Dick was a member of the Rutland during the 1950’s but emigrated to Australia.
To give you an idea of his class he broke the Club 25 record in 1954 with 58-43 at a time when the British Competition Record was only 56-29.
He went on to concentrate on road racing and in both 1955 and 1958 won the first stage of the Tour of Britain, 146 miles from London to Skegness as well as many other races. He rode as a professional for Viking and also represented England in the Tour of Poland.

If you remember Dick and would like to meet up with him a few friends have arranged a gathering at the Gosforth Fields Sports Association, off Stubley Lane in Dronfield Woodhouse on Wednesday, 5th June at 7pm.
Dick is pictured below (third from right) at the Town Hall reception following the 1955 Tour of Britain success by a Sheffield amateur team where he finished 3rd overall.

Minty’s Memorial RR – Sunday 5th May.
A big thanks to Andy Smith for organising the 4th edition of Minty’s Road Race, an event in memory of one the Clubs more colourful characters Ian ‘Minty’ Murray who’s life was tragically cut short in 2009. Thanks to Camilla for handing out the prize money, Jayne and the rest of Ian’s family Diane and Pauline, hope to see you all again next year.

The event all went well and we were blessed with blue skies and sunshine which made the job of marshaling much more pleasant, thanks to everyone that came out to help. As I was driving I didn’t get much of a view of how the events unfolded but here are the top three from each race:-
