Sadly another one of our oldest members, Babs Morris passed away on Tuesday 4th Ocober.

Babs along with her late husband Derek were part of the booming Club scene back in the 1950’s and 60’s.

Our thoughts are with Paul, Susan, John and their families at this sad time.

Tony Fouldes passed away peacefully early on Monday 14th March 2022 in Lincoln County Hospital. Tony was 96 and had spent the last year living in a care home close to his daughter in Lincoln.

Tony was active with the club during the WW II years and went on to be one of a number of Rutland riders who dominated the 24 Hour Championship from 1955 to 1959 – providing individual champions and winning the team award 5 times.

Tony remained active with the Rutland with regards to time trialling, regularly undertaking marshalling duties and race feed support duties on the many events against the clock (typically 10 – 100mile – 12hr & 24hr) that took place on the local North Midlands courses and was always very aware and interested in the performances of the riders competing.

On retirement Tony became part of the “Wednesday Wheelers” gang with other retirees such as George Steers, Ernest & Colin Keeton, Jim Hall, Bert Ridge, Joe Thompson, Geoff Hague, John Clarke and many others heading out into Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire every week for 25 years plus.

Tony returned to the racing scene as a Vet competing against the clock in many events ranging from 10mile – 24hr events. Notable achievements include winning three consecutive VTTA 24 Hour National Championships 1992-1994.

Tony continued riding the bike and his interest in cycling, especially the VTTA North Midlands into his 90’s.

It is with great sadness that another one of our older members passed away on 14 March 2022 peacefully in hospital.

Tony Butterworth who of course had his shop on Catchbar Lane and was known by everyone leaves behind his wife Sue and their son and daughter Oliver and Kate.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this sad time.

Tony’s funeral took place on Wednesday 17th November at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium and was just for family.

A few of Tony’s friends did follow the hearse on their bikes from Tony’s home in Dronfield to the crematorium as a show of respect.

We are proud to announce that – for the first time in 44 years – the venue for this event will be the ‘home of hill climbing’: the leg shattering; VO2 busting; cadence crumbling Winnats Pass.
We are indebted to Castleton Parish Council for considering and allowing this esteemed event to once again be battled out on one of the UK’s most imposing climbs.
The event will take place on 31st October 2021. More information on the event and qualification criteria to follow (because we are expecting a lot of entries) … but in the meantime please like, share and follow.

With help from the Peak RC the Club will this year be promoting the ‘White Peak Road Race’ at Flagg on Sunday 10th May. The event will be an LVRC (now British Masters Cycle Racing) event and will be a counting event in the Percy Stallard series, more details will follow as they are known.

I received news from Paul Morris last week that John ‘Jock’ Caldwell passed away just before Christmas(2019). Not many will remember Jock but he was an active member of the Club along with his wife Betty during the 1950’s / 60’s / 70’s. I’m a little late with this post but his funeral was at Willerby on 2nd January near where he lived in Barton on Humber. I’ll send a card to Betty from the Club but if anyone else wishes to get in touch then please give me a shout and I’ll let you have her address.

Rob is organising a curry night on either Friday 18th or the 25th Oct?

He is going to book the Curry Cottage, Stoney Middleton.

We have a new Club ride. The once monthly “Easy like a Sunday morning” spin around the peaks (or elsewhere) is an opportunity for a chat and a catch up with other club members before well earned cafe stop. No one will be left behind and everyone is welcome. Why not come along and bring someone new to the Club with you!

The next ride will be Sunday 29th September, 10am at the Teacake meet. This allows riders to watch the Monsal Hill Climb on October 6th and save the weekend of the 12th October to support Rutland CC’s Mam Nick hill climb.

Pete Fouldes emailed me this week to let me know that his Dads brother Jack passed away last weekend aged 97 in Rotherham hospital, he had been unwell for some time.
Jack I guess will only be known by a few club members i.e. John Clarke who would have met Jack possibly on the Saturday morning runs to Retford, attended by John , Jim & Kate Hall, Ernest Keeton, George Steers and others, also some of whom, have sadly departed.

Jack’s funeral will be held on Thursday 22nd August at 3.30pm Hutcliffe Wood.

Jack Fouldes Obituary (1922 – 2019)
Jack joined the Rutland CC pre-war (WW II) and was active keeping the club going through the war years (1939 – 1945) with regular club runs into Nottinghamshire. Jack kept the Rutland CC name on the results board down at Blyth when the sporadic, war time, events did take place and held the club record for the fastest 25 for several years.
He completed the Manchester and District 12 hour during the 1940s with little or no support, having to ride there and back from Sheffield.
Jack finished his racing years with the Scala wheelers, the top Sheffield racing team of the wartime era. During the war time years, with little or no traffic the bike was king of the road it wasn’t uncommon for Jack with the Rutland club members to come up against the Sheffield Phoenix coming out of places like Matlock and to be engaged in a kerb to kerb battle as the two clubs attempted to outpace one another. A similar competition used to occur heading to the tea stops out in Nottinghamshire where the Rutland club members would be en-mass all across the A1 in an attempt to be first into the café.
Jack in his later years went on to live in Sutton near Retford where his cycling activities included time trial marshalling and meeting up with the Saturday morning run to the café in Retford attended typically by – Jim & Kate Hall, Ernest Keeton, George Steers, John Clarke and others.
